In April 2005, the body of a white female was discovered in Hickman County, Tennessee. The body, found in an abandoned parking lot, was later identified as 25-year-old Jennifer Smith, of Bucksnort, Tennessee. A DNA profile was collected during an autopsy and placed in the National DNA Database.
In December 2007, a match occurred between the DNA profile collected in Hickman County and a North Carolina convicted offender – John Wayne Boyer.
John Wayne Boyer, brought back to the New Hanover County Detention Facility in June, confessed to the 2005 Hickman County Murder as he was interviewed by Detectives from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and the Hickman County Sheriff’s Office.
Tennessee officials have confirmed that John Wayne Boyer, 52, was indicted on one count of First Degree Murder by the Hickman County Grand Jury earlier this week.
The Tennessee investigation discovered Boyer worked as a truck driver in 2004 and 2005 and stopped at a truck stop in Denmark, TN to refuel his tractor-trailer. He picked the victim up on April 18, 2005 and had sex with her in his truck. The two later had an argument and physical altercation occurred that resulted in Smith’s death.
Boyer’s current North Carolina sentence expires in 2017.
